Putting Suprise Back on the Agenda

Swinging by

If I’m taking time out of my day to drop by your house, do you think I care about the state of your floors? Not even a little bit.”

What ever happened to just popping in? Swinging by?

Calling over?

Knocking on the door & waiting for a response instead of calling ahead.

Everything is scheduled.
If we are caught off guard, we’re usually mortified because theres dishes everywhere and maybe you’re not wearing a bra.
Its awkward. We feel embarrassed.

Have we become so concerned about how people perceive us that we have removed the casual surprises from our lives? Have we really become so worried about people catching us mid-standoff with a roaring child that we are shunning social interaction?

The thing is – we are all busy. Our time is precious.

If I’m taking time out of my day to drop by your house, do you think I care about the state of your floors? Not even a little bit.
Feral kids running round, dinner still on the bench, laundry everywhere, weird smell. Dosen’t matter. I’m here because you’re worth my time.
You’re in the middle of a meltdown? Good timing, I’m here to help you.
New baby been keeping you up all night? Here, let me make you a coffee.
Battling a little depression? Here I am.

Im not going to judge you.

Even if the timing is really bad, even if you’re caught on your way out the door – someone still came to see you, and thats worth something.

Remember how much fun you could get out of a surprise visit when you were younger? Your friend shows up on your doorstep with a box of wine and next thing you’re stumbling in the door at 4am with 1 shoe & Mick Jaggers autograph?
Now, a surprise visit is more likely to lead to folding washing while watching Dr Phil but, its still good for the soul.

In the end we’re all grateful for the company.

Lets put surprise back on the agenda.
Go knock on someones door.
